Katipatch Catchup Issue 29 - 16th June 2008

Hello ladies,

As we write this the much-needed rain for the southern lakes is falling and it feels quite wintry. While we are all being told to turn off anything that isn’t really needed to save electricity, it’s pretty hard to switch off the heating when you’re cold, so it’s a great excuse to make more quilts. There’s nothing cosier than wrapping yourself in a warm quilt made with love.

We are taking expressions of interest for the brand new McKenna Ryan BOM Faith, Hope, Love. This gorgeous creation is a series of nine blocks which can be used as individual wallhangings or by adding sashings and borders, made into a quilt. See the attached picture and let us know if you would like to register. It will be available early in September.

In association with the Open Air Arts Festival which runs from 29th September – 4th October we will be holding our annual Hanging of the Quilts. Be sure to mark this date in your diary now to come and visit us and view the wonderful display of locally-made quilts. Entry is a gold coin donation which goes to the Neurological Foundation, our chosen charity. While you are in the shop, be sure to have a browse through our boxes of second-hand magazines, which we sell for $2 each for the same cause.

The participants in the Juniors classes make some wonderful projects. We are now offering some of those as kits to the public. Called Just 4 Kidz they include kits for an apron, a sewing bag, a sheep and a cushion. Very reasonably priced, they would make a great project for the school holidays.

New NZ fabrics just come in are Gumboots with a bright blue background (very cool), Moas, and Ponga Koru in cream, which makes a lovely background fabric. At $20/m, these are good value.

The Emerald 183 from Husqvarna Viking is a user-friendly, computerized sewing machine, excellent for patchwork. Not a mechanical knob in sight! All stitch selections are made with the touch of a finger and shown in the very bright, well-lit Infodisplay. The machine has 83 wonderful stitches that can be adjusted to your preferences then programmed and saved. The special price for June and July is $999. The Sapphire 830 is another machine from the Husqvarna Viking stables with the same attributes as the Emerald, but with the exclusive sensor foot system. You will also experience all the joy of sewing with the longest free arm in the industry and the largest extended sewing surface, perfect for quilters. This machine has 105 wonderful stitches, 3 alphabets and 10 permanent memories. The special price for June and July is $2,699. Come and try either of these machines for yourself.
